Cloud Acronyms – explanations part 1

On July 12th I posted a listing of A-Z cloud computing acronyms, from AaaS to ZaaS. Here is the first part of the explanations of what these mean.

AaaS – A Capco service, that allows their clients to access a pool of architects to assist on projects. These architects can be employed on a project-by-project basis.

BaaS (Backend as a Service) - A model for providing web developers with a way to link their applications to backend cloud storage.

CaaS (Communications as a Service) - Where an organisations uses one or more communications services, all from the same provider. Can include instant messaging, VoIP and video conferencing services.

DaaS (Desktop as a Service) - Used so users can replicate their computer “desktop” from any location. This allows them to access the same files, in the same way, no matter where they are.

EaaS (Enterprise as a Service) - A concept that incorporates many cloud services for enterprises as part of one model. This can include software, infrastructure and management services.

FaaS (Framework as a Service) - This is where a framework is in place so developers can build cloud systems. In some ways it is similar to Platform as a Service (PaaS).

GaaS (Gaming as a Service ) - Gaming as a Service allows people to play games over the internet via cloud computing. It is where video games are developed so they can be played via the internet.

HaaS (Hardware as a Service ) - Any circumstance whereby computing power is leased from a provider via the cloud. This can include servers, desktops, infrastructure and components.

IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) - Computing infrastructure is provided to allow customers of the service to build their own IT platforms.

JaaS (Java as a Service) - A platform that can be leased to run and scale Java applications.

KaaS (Knowledge as a Service) - Some vendors offer knowledge – in the form of guides or information, for example – via the cloud to accompany their services. This is referred to as Knowledge as a Service.

LaaS (Location as a Service) - Where location data is available to developers of location-based applications.

MaaS (Metal as a Service) - Developed by Canonical, MaaS assists in the deployment of dynamic provisioning of hyperscale computing environments. It is a layer underneath Infrastructure as a Service.

MBaaS (Mobile Backend as a Service) - A model for providing mobile developers with a way to link their applications to backend cloud storage. This is the same as BaaS, but specifically for mobile developers.
